Take 5 With Alan - A Stalwart of the Smoke Alarm Industry
With just over one month to go until Queensland’s 2022 smoke alarm legislation rolls out, we thought we’d sit down with one of Smoke Alarm Solutions’ long standing employees – Alan Haydon.
Thanks for joining us Al. Can you tell us a bit about your role with Smoke Alarm Solutions?
I’m part of the Field Management team here at Smoke Alarm Solutions. My role is Field Training and Work, Health and Safety Manager. This involves training our Technicians to ensure they have the knowledge and skills they need to be able to install smoke alarms in properties to the legislative requirements. I also ensure they have the practical know-how about smoke alarms so they can educate tenants about how they operate.
As training manager you must be able to recite the legislation to the letter?
After 13 years in the industry with Smoke Alarm Solutions understanding legislation around smoke alarms has become second nature. In starting out in the field as a Technician, becoming a Field Supervisor and eventually getting to my current position, I not only know a great deal about the legislation, but I can also see how it works in a practical sense.
13 Years is such a big achievement – what do you love most about the smoke alarm industry?
I love that we are actively making Australian homes and occupants safer. My time with Smoke Alarm Solutions has allowed me to be part of the original introduction of Smoke Alarm legislation and the more recent Queensland changes. Each change has made the occupants of Queensland homes so much safer and it has been great to be instrumental in providing those measures of safety.
What’s your personal opinion about Queensland’s 2022 smoke alarm legislation?
I applaud the Queensland government for making the changes, particularly around the need for interconnected smoke alarms. There has been incredible development in the technology of smoke alarms to facilitate the new changes and this translates into better outcomes for upgrading all your properties. We all have the opportunity to make any occupant safe and alert them faster about a house fire and increase their chances of survival.
Have you had the smoke alarms upgraded in your own house?
I absolutely have. I had my upgrade completed a few years ago when the legislation first changed. I have a family myself and I want to do everything I can to protect them in the case of a house fire.
Thanks for talking to us Al. What’s you last message to our readers?
Get your smoke alarms upgraded! Not only is it mandated by legislation but when it comes down to it, it’s about safety and protecting the people in your properties.
