Who Are You Trusting to Upgrade Your Properties to New Legislation?

Smoke Alarm Solutions is Australia’s leading provider of smoke alarm services to the real estate industry and we have been providing peace of mind for Queensland Property Managers since 2007.

New Queensland legislation for rental properties is only four months away and we are incredibly concerned with the growing trend we are witnessing as we edge closer to the smoke alarm deadline, with a steep increase of 2022 non-compliance in properties where an attempt to upgrade has been carried out by another smoke alarm provider

The 2022 QLD legislation is strict and complex. We are seeing an overwhelming number of new companies and local electricians entering the smoke alarm compliance market, especially in regional Queensland. These opportunistic companies are aiming to take advantage of the change in legislation and often don’t have the necessary skillset or understanding of the legislation to ensure compliance is met. This situation seems to be escalating – particularly in the last six months.

In July the below rates of non-compliance were observed in regional Queensland properties where an attempt had been made to upgrade to 2022 legislation using a third-party provider:

Cairns – 32%
Townsville – 59%
Mackay – 27%
Rockhampton – 61%
Gladstone – 42%

The below image is one such example of poor workmanship, where the battery back-up to the 240 volt hard wired alarm is broken and has been ‘repaired’ with tape. This would lead to the alarm’s warranty being void and the inability to guarantee the alarm’s service life or effectiveness.
