Be fire smart over summer
The largest provider of smoke alarm compliance and maintenance services to the Australian real estate industry is urging New South Wales renters to be fire smart over the warmer months.
Exclusive data obtained by Smoke Alarm Solutions and conducted by Fire & Rescue New South Wales, discovered the state’s firefighters responded to more than 3,865 house fires in the past year with 45 per cent originating in the kitchen.
Smoke Alarm Solutions CEO Cameron Davis said there’s a number of steps renters should take to minimise the threat of house fires this summer.
“It’s important Property Managers remind renters to check BBQ’s before they’re fired up this summer,” Mr Davis said.
“Check there are no cracks in the gas hose and the connections are tight.
“Never leave cooking on the BBQ or in the kitchen unattended. It takes just seconds for a fire to start, with sometimes tragic consequences.”
Mr Davis said New South Wales residents also need to be fire smart outside the home.
“Landlords should ensure there is no rubbish around their properties and gutters are free of leaves and debris. Mowed lawns and well-maintained gardens minimise the threat of fires,” Mr Davis said.
“If you’re leaving home for a holiday or a camping trip, make sure your appliances are turned off and you have working smoke alarms.”
Alarmingly only 75 per cent* of New South Wales homes have working smoke alarms.
“Working smoke alarms should be in every home, but 25 per cent of New South Wales residents are gambling with their safety and the lives of family and friends,” Mr Davis said.
"Nobody thinks it’ll happen to them, but home fires will claim two lives in New South Wales this month.
“The best investment families and landlords can make this summer is up-to-date, working smoke alarms.”
